Fort Beekenburg history

Fort Beekenburg was built in 1703 in the Caracas Bay to defend the Spanish Water. Caracas Bay with the backdrop Spanish Water was one of the few suitable places to enter Curacao from sea. Therefore it was decided to build a fort to make it impossible for enemies to reach Willemstad. The fort was named after Sir van Beek who was in charge of the defense of the city between 1701 and 1704.

During the 18th century, the fort sustained various attacks by French and British troops. At a certain moment, the British tried to bypass the fort by going over the adjacent mountain. However, this gave so much trouble and took so much time that the plan was discontinued before the Dutch had gathered all their troops. From 1800 to 1803 and from 1807 to 1816 the British occupied Curaçao. Several times Fort Beekenburg was attacked by pirates, but without success.

This fort has been renovated lately and today is the official opening making it once more accessible for everyone interested in history and to enjoy the view over the Caribbean Sea and the Spanish Water.
