Overview
The oldest synagogue building in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere. The name means The Hope of Israel-Emanuel. The synagogue is often referred to as ‘The Snoa’, short for esnoga, an old Portuguese word for synagogue. The congregation dates from the 1650s, and consists of Spanish and Portuguese Jews from the Netherlands and Brazil.
